Reporting & Information

• The Justice Department’s information on reporting Hate Crimes:  Please report hate crimes to the Federal Bureau of Investigations after calling 911.
• The Justice Department’s hate crimes webpage:  This website is the Department’s one-stop resource on hate crimes.  The site describes the Department’s efforts to prevent, combat, and respond to hate crimes and provides hate crime-related facts and statistics, hate crimes case examples, as well as state-specific information.
• Link to the FBI’s hate crimes webpage:  The Bureau has elevated responding to hate crimes to its highest-level national threat priority, which increased the amount of resources available for hate crimes prevention and investigations and made hate crimes a focus for all of the Bureau’s field offices.

Acts & Initiatives

• The Justice Department’s website concerning the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd, Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act:  This statute makes it a crime for any person to cause bodily injury (or attempt to do so with a dangerous weapon) when motivated by a person’s actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity, or disability (including HIV status). 
• The Justice Department’s announcement of the United Against Hate initiative to combat unlawful acts of hate:  Through the Initiative, all 94 U.S. Attorneys’ offices will host outreach and community engagement programs to address and prevent unlawful acts of hate.

• The Department of Justice’s Community Relations Service’s website:  CRS assists communities facing conflict based on actual or perceived race, color, national origin, gender, gender identity, sexual orientation, religion, or disability by providing facilitated dialogue, mediation, training, and consultation to enhance capacity to prevent future conflict.
